They do well in many climates and sun conditions, but they will bloom best in full sun to light shade. Plus, columbines are deer resistant, and birds and butterflies love the nectar found in tip of the petal’s thin spur!HOW TO PLANT COLUMBINE SEEDS: For best results, put columbine seeds in the refrigerator for 24 hours prior to planting. Another, slightly more intensive way to stratify (a process of breaking seeds’ dormancy by subjecting them to moist/cold treatments) your seeds is to first, sow them into a container filled with moist soil. Next, place the container in a plastic bag and refrigerate or freeze it for 3 weeks. Finally, remove the seeds, and place them outdoors in a sunny location or under grow lights and allow them to germinate (21 to 28 days). If sowing outdoors: In the early spring (3 to 4 weeks before the last frost), sow your columbine seeds on top of lightly raked soil. They do not need to be covered. Your columbine seeds will germinate in around 21 days.If starting indoors, plant columbine seeds 6 weeks before the average last spring frost.Columbines are perennials that are hardy to zones 3 to 8 or 9, depending on variety.HOW TO CARE FOR COLUMBINE: When flowers begin to fade, dead head to allow for fresh blooms. When the season is over, cut down to the ground.HOW TO COLD STRATIFY SEEDSEveryone wants plants. Now. But there are a small group of seeds that require a special treatment before they will even germinate in a climate that has temperatures below freezing. This process is called “Cold Stratification.” There are two ways to accomplish this.Fall PlantingIf time is not a problem, you can put them in the ground in fall and let them go through a winter. They will sprout next year, but not flower. The following year, having gone through two winters, they will return and bloom as expected. If you are planting poppies direct sowing is recommended in late fall or early spring for zones 2-8Create a “False Winter”The second way to do this, if you want to save time, is to create a “false winter.” What this does is trick the seeds into thinking they have been in the ground for an entire year. All they need is to be in your refrigerator for at least 2 ½ months.About 3 months before spring, place seeds in a plastic bag with a handful of slightly dampened, clean peat, paper towel, or a mix of clean peat and sand.Seal and label the bag with seed name and date, then store in the refrigerator (not freezer) for at least 2½ mos. before planting in spring. (The cold period mimics a full winter’s cold.) Once your seed has been treated, it’s ready to plant when spring arrives.WE SHIP FAST & FREE!Your orders ship the next business date after payment via US mail. NO TRACKING. About Us We are a small family run seed processor that has a long tradition of farming for many generations. I fondly remember my Grandfather telling stories about his Grandfather tilling the earth and the events that impacted his success. The stories bring to life the courage and creativity required to survive capricious weather and market prices. Our history makes it clear that the rewards of farming, including the birthing of the calves, the bounty of a good harvest, and the family’s feeling of being rooted in the soil. I still remember with pride, getting to sit on my Grandfathers lap while driving the tractor for the first time during corn harvest. In addition to commercial crops, most family farms also have large gardens to grow much of the food consumed on a farm. Growing your own vegetables, flowers, spices and herbs, canning and freezing were a normal part of life on the farm. We always saved seed from each plant for starting the cycle for the next year. We would like the opportunity to share some of these seeds with you. Maize Morado – Black Corn from Peru

Maiz Morado was cultivated in the Peruvian Andes in ancient times and was a staple of the fabled Incan Empire. The large, deep, purple-black kernels form on slender pupple cobs as you see in one of the photos. The color is so intense, it can stain your hands. Sweet, ripe Maiz Morado is the main ingredient in Chichi Morada, Peru’s national drink. I’ve made it, and it is pretty good. Like all fruits and vegetables with purple coloring, the corn is high in anthocyanins, a powerful anti-oxidant. You can also dry and grind the corn for dark blue corn meal or eat it like sweet corn at the milk stage – though I haven’t tried that. The stalks are giant – reaching 8-10 foot and each bears two 8 inch or longer ears, many with bright purple husks. This corn matures later in the season. You need about 100 days. It does fine here, though, on the edge of zones 5 and 6. 80 seeds per packetno international sales

SCARBOROUGH SEEDS 25 SEEDS WHITE CORN (SILVER KING) HYBRID NON-GMO USA

Scarborough Seeds SEEDS GUARANTEED TO GROW *ALL SEEDS ARE FRESH EACH SEASON AND MAINTAINED IN COLD STORAGE TO INSURE FRESHNESS TO YOU* The most important question to ask when buying seed is: Are the seeds good, will they grow? Nothing is worse than putting in all the work to plant a garden and nothing comes up. All Scarborough Seeds are germination tested and are fresh every season. In addition, they are maintained throughout the season in cold storage, which slows the aging process and assures they will still be fresh when you receive them. They are guaranteed to grow, and we provide planting instructions on every package to help you achieve success with your project. SCARBOROUGH SEEDS White Corn (Silver King) 25 Seeds 82 days. The Silver King Hybrid variety of corn seeds grow to be between six and seven foot tall stalks, which provide large ears of white corn with a sweet flavor, growing up to eight inches. The Silver King Hybrid is mature after eighty days. This variety is adaptable and particularly resistant to disease. A high quality, homozygous, sugary enhanced (se) white corn. Tender kernels consistently fill each ear all the way to the tip. Ears average 8 inches long with 16 to 18 rows. The medium green husks provide good cover. Silver King is tolerant to Stewart’s wilt, northern corn leaf blight, and common rust. Begin by sowing directly outdoors, 1 1/2 inches deep with six inches between seeds and thirty inches between rows. When choosing a site in your garden, keep the sun in mind; these tall stalks have potential to block the sunlight from other plants. While growing, the crops will need one to one and a half inches of water. When the kernels are firm, the ear is ripe. To harvest, firmly pull the ear downwards while twisting. The unhusked ears can be kept in the fridge for up to one week.
