Jerusalem Artichokes-3 SproutingTubers for Planting, Tall Plant with Big Yields

The Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus), also called sunroot, sunchoke, wild sunflower, topinambur, or earth apple, is a species of sunflower native to central North America. It is cultivated widely across the temperate zone for its tuber, which is used as a root vegetable. The flowers are yellow and produced in capitate flowerheads, which are 5–10 cm (2.0–3.9 in) in diameter, with 10–20 ray florets and 60 or more small disc florets. (resource from Wikipedia)The tubers are often elongated and uneven, typically 7.5–10 cm (3.0–3.9 in) long and 3–5 cm (1.2–2.0 in) thick, and vaguely resembling a ginger root in appearance, with a crisp and crunchy texture when raw. They vary in color from pale brown to white, red, or purple. (resource from Wikipedia)Sunchoke tubers can be planted in the garden as early as 2 to 3 weeks before the average last frost date in spring. They are best planted in soil that has warmed to 50°F (10°C). In warm-winter regions, sunchokes can be planted in winter. Sunchokes require 110 to 150 days to reach harvest. The sunchoke is a hardy perennial that grows from 5 to 10 feet tall. The plant has rough-textured leaves 4 to 8 inches (10-20cm) long and is topped with small yellow flowers 2 to 3 inches (5-7cm) across. Sunchokes will survive a hard freeze if protected by a layer of soil or mulch. Tubers rapidly spread and divide but can be controlled by root barriers. The name Jerusalem artichoke is a misnomer: the plant is not related to the artichoke, though the sunchoke’s flavor may be reminiscent of the artichoke. The plant is not from Jerusalem: the name is probably derived from the Italian name for sunflower, girasole, which means turning to the sun.Plant sunchokes in full sun. The sunchoke prefers loose, well-drained soil but will grow almost anywhere. Planting and spacing. Plant sunchoke tubers 2 to 6 inches deep, 12 to 18 inches apart. Space rows 36 inches apart.Companion plants. Corn, rhubarb, peanuts. Avoid planting sunchokes with tomatoes. We ship the package same day if you place order by 11:00am. No return accepted.

1000 “Great Lakes Gold” Tobacco Seeds FROM MICHIGAN! Organic, Heirloom, non-GMO

***This is not a new listing; I had to relist it and lost all previous ratings and information; thank you loyal repeat customers!*** Variety is a Virginia Gold Heirloom tobacco (N. tabacum), but I like to joke they’re “Great Lakes Gold”, since I grew them right here in the beautiful Great Lakes State! Specifically, these fresh seeds were harvested from mature tobacco plants in southeast Michigan (USDA Zone 6a). I have no idea if they are more hardy to cold temperatures but they certainly coped with them here 😉 In all seriousness, the plants were sown, fed (with organic compost), watered, and harvested by hand, including the seed which was painstakingly beat out of the seed pods with a mallet. For planting and harvesting/curing instructions, please check online or contact me (I will send you an entire written document of the in-depth instructions). The rules are simple but absolutely MUST be followed for good germination, especially heat and humidity requirements. Please note: The seeds are EXTREMELY small, some of the smallest of any crop. Your quantity will appear small, but rest assured I have actually put far more than the 1,000 advertised in the title. For ballpark numbers, 1 gram tobacco seeds = 1 teaspoon = 10,000 seeds. Yes, you’re reading that right. I put about a quarter or third teaspoon so you don’t think I’m cheating you.

About Us We are a small family run seed processor that has a long tradition of farming for many generations. I fondly remember my Grandfather telling stories about his Grandfather tilling the earth and the events that impacted his success. The stories bring to life the courage and creativity required to survive capricious weather and market prices. Our history makes it clear that the rewards of farming, including the birthing of the calves, the bounty of a good harvest, and the family’s feeling of being rooted in the soil. I still remember with pride, getting to sit on my Grandfathers lap while driving the tractor for the first time during corn harvest. In addition to commercial crops, most family farms also have large gardens to grow much of the food consumed on a farm. Growing your own vegetables, flowers, spices and herbs, canning and freezing were a normal part of life on the farm. We always saved seed from each plant for starting the cycle for the next year.
