The bicolored leaves are green at the base with a rich ruby red tone towards the edges. It can be easily dated back to the 1800s, Marvel of Four Seasons Lettuce is known for its excellent flavor and incredible crisp yet tender texture. True to its name, this cold-hardy lettuce variety can be grown year-round in many temperate climates. Marvel of Four Seasons Lettuce is a Bibb or Butterhead type lettuce. It is a head forming lettuce that is open-pollinated. It is also known as Merveille des Quatre Saisons Lettuce (in French). This lettuce variety thrives in 4 to 8 hours of sun in moderate temperatures (60 – 80 degrees F). If kept moist, this lettuce variety doesn’t go bitter and makes a great full salad. The lettuce head measures 8″-12″ in diameter. Seeds can be sown directly in the garden and will mature in about 65 to 70 days. They should be planted in rows set about 36 inches apart and thinned so that plants are no closer than 12 inches apart. Lettuce plants require about an inch of water per week for optimal growth. If growing Marvel of Four Seasons Lettuce during the hot summer months, they will require extra water to prevent bolting. Keeping the soil cool and moist with layers of mulch or straw will also help it grow through difficult weather. Marvel of Four Seasons Lettuce can be planted in earlier spring then other lettuces and then replanted at the end of summer as this variety enjoys cooler weather. Keep in mind that like most lettuce types, slugs and snails can sometimes be a problem.
